| Posted by GuyMac | | | Some people reported boot issues after upgrading their OS with the latest update. (may 12th 2006).
Affected systems : Intel based Macs
Possible solution:
- Boot into Safe Mode
- To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
- Be sure the computer is shut down.
- Press the power button.
- Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
- Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
- Go to system System Preferences/Accounts/Login items
- Clear all items
- Open Finder from dock and go to MachintoshHD/Library/Startupitems
- move all items to trash and empty
- Restart
Update:
Adobe Version Cue startup item should be the cause of this problem.
Rather than removing all the startup items in the System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and all the startup items in Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems, simply try removing Version Cue from Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems/

In Software Update or on Apple's website you can find a new update which patches the first one.
As usual Apple didn't say what was wrong with the first one, but updating again is recommended.
You can find a link to Apple's download pages just on top of this page. | | | | | Posted by GuyMac | | | Shortly after reports of the first virus for Mac OS X, a new security flaw has surfaced.
The "bad guy" is the option "Open 'safe' files after downloading" in Apple's Safari web browser. This feature is activated by default. Its function is to automatically display images and movies after they are transmitted to the user's computer, using the application assigned to that particular document format.
So disableing this option might just be a good idea.
But (yes, there's a BUT) : When a shell script is stored into a ZIP archive without the so-called shebang line (a "shebang line" is a line such as "#!/bin/bash" to indicate which interpreter should handle its execution. However, Mac OS X will load scripts without a shebang line into the Terminal where it will be executed by a shell. If the user has assigned the Finder to open scripts using the Terminal, this will happen automatically !) , Safari no longer recognizes the content as potentially dangerous and executes shell commands without a confirmation prompt.
This is not good ! And bad things can happen.
Read the full story on Heise.de. You can even download an exemple file to proof what can happen. It's harmless though but proofs caution is needed when surfing around with Safari. | | | |
