Babbel
BabbelIf you don't want to follow the mainstream by using the well known chat clients for Mac. Babbel is a good alternative. However still an Alpha release, it already shows its potential to concur with the 'big' ones.
In the future the official release will be shareware, however there will be a Freeware light version available. It won't have all the features of the Shareware version though.

BitchX
BitchXBitchX has its roots in the Linux world but it made his way to the Macintosh.
You have to be a bit experienced with IRC to use this client.
You can use the original "terminal" version aswell, but than you need X11 to be installed on your Mac.

irssi for Mac
irssi for MacBased on the *nix IRC client irssi. Irssi is a powerful, free of charge, open source IRC client. It combines the power of the irssi engine with an elegant and flexible GUI.
For MacOS X there are currently two interfaces available both based on irssi:MacOS X Freeware
Snak
SnakSnak is also one of the established chat clients.
You might want to try Snak, it's a good client and customizable to your needs.
